I have always considered simplicity a gift, the opposite of superficiality. Indeed, simplicity is about a complete, independent, and always dignified entity, whereas what is called superficial generally reveals a lack: of depth, of care, of honesty. With the aim of shaping an art work according to these and other noble values (and in order to avoid any accusation of superficiality) an artist conceives fascinating and complex forms, which sometimes tend to be artificial, redundant or unclear. In one word, an artist can easily forget to be simple.
The violin, especially when unaccompanied, is an instrument which doesn’t leave space for hesitation: the correspondence between the emission of sound and the expressive tension is so fragile, that the risk of falling is always there. Daniele is a curious, agile and generous protagonist: not only does not he fall under the weight of historic heritage, he is also a virtuoso who knows how to listen to the space and adjusts his gesture to it (one of the rarest qualities to be found in a musician). Northern Lights is his solitary story up to now, a story made of real and imaginary fragments from the places of his heart; while listening to this album, for thirty minutes it may also become our story – simple and necessary.
