In 1600 in Spain, near Zaragoza, where there was a civil war going on, there was a handsome man named Manrico who was a troubadour by trade, that is, he went around singing poetry, so much so that he always carried a kind of guitar with him, even when he went into battle. He said he was the son of Azucena, a rather mad gypsy who kept hallucinating and who told of having kidnapped and burnt a child to avenge his mother.
As a young and bold man, Manrico sided with the rebellious commoners against the ruling Aragonese, but because he was also arrogant and conceited, he always managed to get himself into a bit of a pickle. For example, he first made Leonora, the lady-in-waiting of the Princess of Aragon, fall in love with him, and then he also confronted her suitor, the Count of Luna, a nobleman in the service of the Aragonese.
The fact is that after much playing, singing and fighting, Manrico is eventually captured and killed by the Count of Luna, who soon discovers that he is her brother.
It seems that Azucena had burnt the wrong child.
In our opinion, if instead of singing poetry he had gone around dancing, it might have been better.
